Ativan and Xanax are two drugs from the benzodiazepine class, which have a lot of similarities. However, they also have their own differences, so it is impossible to say unambiguously which drug wins in the Ativan vs Xanax fight.
Replacing these drugs with each other is strictly prohibited without doctor’s prescription, despite the fact that they are designed specifically to treat problems with insomnia and panic attacks. Ativan is used for a mild solution to a disease such as insomnia associated with anxiety disorders: the drug causes sleep in patients. Xanax is also used to help in this case, but it is used more often for relief of acute attacks of anxiety and sudden sleep problems.
Xanax is considered to be more aggressive drug; it often causes the development of dependence in patients, especially if the human body has already been weakened by the fight against alcohol or drug addiction.
It is not recommended to use these medications together; however, benzodiazepines can always be combined with antidepressants to treat depressive conditions without anxiety attacks. Otherwise, the patient’s condition can easily worsen.
The action of benzodiazepines turns out to be on such a component as gamma-amino butyric acid. These are powerful enough drugs: both Xanax and Ativan will almost immediately show you the result. Initially, both drugs are anxiolytics and muscle relaxants.
Effects of drugs
The effect of these two drugs is almost the same. Nevertheless, Ativan is strictly forbidden to be taken with alcohol: in this case, the side effects are immediately guaranteed to increase. Xanax should also be taken with caution; it is poorly compatible with alcohol, but not as critical as Ativan.
Both drugs have a relaxing effect; contribute to the recovery of sleep. Ativan has a greater relaxing effect, it also provokes drowsiness, so it is not recommended to take it if you are traveling by car or working with machinery. With the joint reception of Ativan with other drugs, the feeling of drowsiness is greatly enhanced.
Also Ativan and Xanax help cope with epileptic seizures and fight depression, regardless of its cause.
Most of the side effects of these drugs are similar. For example, the following symptoms may appear when taking Ativan, or when taking Xanax:
- excessive drowsiness
- pain in the muscles.
More severe side effects are:
- vision problems
- problems with libido.
Ativan can also provoke yellowness of whites, the appearance of small wounds in the mouth and mucous membranes. These side effects disappear immediately after the drug is discontinued.
An allergic reaction can be very unpleasant: in this case, there may be swelling, breathing problems, severe convulsions, including a nervous tic. If you are allergic to one of the ingredients in the medications, do not take them. Also take the medicine with caution and under the supervision of a doctor if you have had allergic reactions to other drugs from this group.
The appearance of side effects can be triggered by drinking alcohol; refrain from this. Xanax can also be addictive with prolonged use or if there is an anamnesis of problems with alcohol or drugs. Inform the doctor in advance about this problem.
Contraindications for these drugs are almost identical. They include allergic reactions, as well as the joint intake of other strong drugs, including beta-blockers, antibiotics, etc.
Xanax is not recommended for patients with glaucoma. Taking both drugs is not recommended for longer than 7 days, otherwise dependence may occur.
When used according to the instructions, the preparations do not cause strong negative side effects. If you have any contraindications or features of the body that can affect the effect of drugs, be sure to consult a doctor before starting treatment.
Ativan and Xanax are very similar to the recommendations for use, because they are in one group of drugs. However, side effects and contraindications are also the same. Nevertheless, it is strongly advised not to replace the drugs on their own and prescribe an application outside the schedule without consulting a doctor.
